a Delia update

How to Cheat at Cooking is continuing to sell strongly in the UK (over 600,000 copies and counting - an extraordinary success!), and I’m excited to announce that it will also be distributed in Australia this year by Random House.

Megan Morton opened her bespoke prop house, The Propery, located at b2 studios in Sydney, last night. I’m sad to have missed the party, but thrilled with the way her branding package is coming together: Megan has such distinctive personal style: it’s a pleasure to work with a client who’s willing to play with whimsy to such beautiful effect. Such a treat.

The IACP presentation was a huge success - a great group of people, a lively discussion and a fabulous response to the material. It was a pleasure meeting and working with Catherine and Dana, and I’m looking forward to working with the organization leading up to next year’s conference in Denver.

I’ll be speaking at the IACP 2008 International Conference in New Orleans on April 19. I’ll be joining Catherine Bell, of Dish magazine, and Dana Bowen, from Saveur in this session:Have Laptop, Will Travel – How to Get Your Culinary Travel Stories Into Print ” Magazine and newspaper editors frequently receive submissions from food writers keen to write about their culinary travel experiences; however very few are ever accepted. This session will focus on how to pitch a story and come away with a commission, how to seek help with travel costs and what might be expected of you in return, the importance of good research to find the untold stories and where and how to get assistance and introductions at your destination, including the pros and cons of being “hosted.” A major stumbling block for freelance writers can be the images to accompany their story. Often seen as more important than the words, where will the images come from, what form should they take and who pays?”I’m knee deep in source material (and plenty of beautiful imagery) to share there … looking forward to it very much … if you’ll be at the conference, let me know - I’d love to meet you …

A project I developed with Delia Smith (the UK’s most beloved and biggest selling cookery writer) and Ebury (the leading publisher of general non-fiction books in the UK) last year, Delia’s How To Cheat at Cooking has gone to Number 1 in the UK (topping the fiction and non-fiction book charts) selling 48,938 copies in just two days, which makes it one of the fastest selling books since records began. The book uses an innovative binding technique, and presents a completely new look for Delia (big thanks to John Kernick) - I’m glad it’s off to such a great start.
